What is a California Swimming Pool Contractor’s License Bond?
According to California Code of Regulations Title 16, Division 8, Article 3. A Swimming Pool Contractor is classified as C-53 license class and constructs swimming pools, spas or hot tubs, including the installation of solar heating equipment. Effective January 1st, 2016, the California contractor’s license bond requirement has been increased from $12,500 to $15,000 per Senate Bill 467. The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) requires all businesses or individuals who construct or alter, or offer to construct or alter, any building, highway, road, parking facility must be licensed and if the total cost (labor and materials) of one or more contracts on the project is $500 or more. Other contractors, such as plumbers or landscapers, should work within their license classification, and cannot be responsible for the overall project. Landscape contractors may contract for a swimming pool, if it is part of a larger landscaping project.
In order to obtain your swimming pool contractors license, you are required to pass the Trade examination as well as the Law & Business exam. Even though you can apply for a swimming pool contractors license when you are 18 years old, it is recommended that you be at least 23 years old due to experience requirement. Additional license requirements include the following:
- 4 Years Journey Level Experience.
- A Qualifying Individual to sign off on your experience.
- A way to prove your experience if the state asks for documentation.
- Pass a background inspection (includes fingerprints)
- Provide proof of workers comp insurance
